Sound Off: Sex on Twitter

Several weeks ago we asked our readers to Sound Off About Twitter Automation and many of you answered the call. This time we are looking for your opinions on the matter of Sex on Twitter. You’ve probably all seen the scantily clad avatars of both men and woman who ply their good looks and seductive offers to weasel their way onto your friends list. If you are auto-following people you probably tuned into your friends list one day and wondered, “hey, where did all the half naked people come from?” On the other hand, you may be seeking them out and following them intentionally, either way – we want to know what you think. Is Sex on Twitter okay with you?

Now the Twitter Fools don’t want to be known as prudes, but we do think there is such as thing a etiquette and decorum. Admittedly it is soft porn – filled with the suggestive tweets of scantily clad avatars. But, we don’t particularly want to be associated with the busty babes and naughty dudes on Twitter – at least not publicly – so we unfollow these folks pretty quickly.

Sure, it was probably inevitable that porn would develop a foot hold in the Twitter mainstream, it is rampant on the internet and quite a successful money maker. At the same time, we’ve seen Twitter apps such as HeartOn and Twatr come and go which leads us to believe that turning Twitter into a swinger’s network isn’t going as well as some might have hoped. Even still, we know sex is part of the social fabric and Twitter is, after all, a social network so maybe SEX deserves some space to roam and be free on the network.

Most of all we want to know what you think. So, Sound Off!

Is sex on Twitter cool or not?
Do you vote with your Follow/Unfollow Power and if so – are you for or against the sexually explicit girls and boys on Twitter?
Is it all spam to you and do you want a tool to block it?
Would you support Ratings for Twitter accounts indicating Adult Content when appropriate?
Would you like to see more dating and/or hook up Twitter apps?
Have you found that special someone through Twitter already?

Clearly there are people who (I assume) are interested in porn on twitter (it is after all a big biz online), I don't happen to be one of them. As far as them following me, I don't have a problem w/using the Block button to keep them out of my stream!
I am annoyed however when they @reply me! Having my name next to their "butt" "bust" or "whatever" pic just disturbs me! LOL!

For those who are simply using those pics b/c they think that is necessary to get friends...that is sad! And for the "chicks" that are doing it, it's like real life: although you may get a lot of followers, you won't get the good ones!
I found it very interesting at the Social Media Summit that the men's panel all agreed that they are "leery of" and less likely to follow women who are overtly sexy!
That elevated my faith in huMANity I must admit:)

This is why I like the new "report spam" feature. I will report someone that looks like the are selling porn in anyform on Twitter and following me. I like easy features that allow for collective monotoring like this. Then if someone wants to talk about something I don't want to hear or see just do it with their friends and don't include me. The funning thing to me is the businesses that auto-follow what these people which is a poor reflection on them.

I think what disturbs me more than seeing scantily clothed men and women are seeing fully clothed folks who are perverse and vulgar behind those sweet unassuming smiles. I can block the nekked pics but it takes a little while longer to discern who, in my stream, has ulterior motives that aren't always immediatelyvisible to the nekked eye. I am one of those people who met their spouse thru social media--a site that started out harmless--then turned into a cesspool of smut.

I 'intentionally' use my Twitter time reading and articulating positive content. I use it to creatively and succinctly articulate material that uplifts my spirit. This is one vehicle I use to exercise my intellect.

When a scantily clad or suggestive avatar shows up on my deck, I lose focus! I go from a pretty high level of awareness ... right down to the lowest level -- animal! I like to choose the time and place when my physical senses are ignited. And that time and place is not on Twitter! And it is very 3-dimensional! LOL

We each have our own unique view of what is appropriate for us, and what is not, so being who we are is fine with me, as long as we do not violate the rights of others.

Socially Able

It hasn't bothered me too much, it is fairly easy to block these folks. But, as @heathero says, I don't appreciate the spammy @reply messages.

Now that you mention it, Ratings for Twitter profiles might not be a bad thing. Right now Twitter seems wide open with kids and adults alike on the network. There must be a way to protect the younger ones. As much as the revealing avatars might be an issue with some, the language can also become pretty obscene.

Hey ~ is this a local group on Discus? I do everything to ignore, block, report spam. Delete, delete. Focus only on those inspirational quotes!

I too love that you can, not only block followers you are not happy with, but you can report those who are posting inappropriate content. Because I can block those people, then this is only a minor annoyance. Now, if I were not able to block, this would be more than an annoyance. I'm very happy that Twitter and Facebook work to keep the smut off the sites. If you're looking for it, you can certainly find it. There's no need to subject everyone to it.
