Yeah just got my first TrueTwit validation request — what did I do? Unfollowed the person who sent it to me. I find this highly annoying and lazy from the person who’d use something like this. Another gotcha “The only way for them to avoid continually receiving these DMs from others is to register with TrueTwit themselves.” – this means that when you sign up, all of your new followers get the validation message, and no, I would not want to subject my followers to this. #fail

TweetBlocker sounds more interesting -- I'll try to check it out. Yes, there should be a human element (you cannot rely on tools like TrueTwit to automate it for you and look like spam in the process.)

While we are grateful for Jonathan's tweetblocker product and his comment here...unfortunately he inserted more links than we were comfortable with in his reply.

I'm not a big fan of true twit. it reminds me of those annoying earthlink emails "the person you are emailing doesn't have you in their address book, please go out of your way to take extra time to go through our process..." the 2 times i actually clicked to validate i got "request cancelled" and a broken link.
My process certainly isn't foolproof, but seems to work ok. I go to my followers list a couple of times per wk and look at:
a) photo? no, no follow
b) where do they tweet from? api, either no follow, or look at stream (tweets) to decide. Almost always spammers.
c) last 2 of name = 2 digit number, look at tweets (70% are porn bots!)
d) read last tweet. if spammy, i either look at stream or just don't follow
Lastly, when in doubt, I follow & will promptly unfollow if I get a "thanks for following now go to my website" DM, or at the sign of "spamminess". That's the beauty of twitter. I can always Unfollow. ;)

Thanks for reviewing Tweet Blocker. We realize our metrics engine is not 100% correct all the time, but we are working extremely hard to refine our logic and improve our algorithm every day. We actually just rolled out some impressive new updates to our site the other day and definitely encourage you and your readers to revisit the site. We're confident you'll be impressed with the way we're locating spam now.

http://tweetblocker.com

We need your help!!! Everyone has a voice and every voice is heard on our feedback forum at http://tweetblocker.uservoice.com. If you would like to see a feature added or maybe you found something that doesn't look quite right. Let us know. We're very good at responding to each request.

One more thing. We've teamed up with the famous Tweetie app to integrate our technology into their fine app. Here's a preview of what that will look like in their next release: http://skitch.com/jonathannelson/b5h37/tweetie-...

If you would like Tweet Blocker functionality integrated into your favorite Twitter client. Please contact the developers via Twitter or by email.

We encourage everyone to please vote 3 points on the following Twitter client feature proposals:

Tweet Deck: http://bit.ly/Qne9
Seesmic: http://bit.ly/1bDDNA

Thanks again and remember together we can help defeat spam on Twitter.

Jonathan Nelson
Product Director | Hashrocket Labs
www.hashrocket.com
