Say-Goodbye-Auto-Welcome-Direct-Messages
Auto-welcome direct messages aren’t inherently bad. Based on the feedback we received on our post about Twitter Automation, comments on the broader question of automating Twitter is mixed. To sum it up, the majority seem to think limited automation is okay for certain purposes. In our opinion, however, auto-welcome dms are misused by many more people than those who use them well. In fact, bad auto-welcome dms are quickly becoming one of the ‘noise’ factors on Twitter that we’d simply like to shut out.

Affiliate offers, instant cash schemes, Mafia, and Facebook invites are clogging our direct message stream at ever increasing rates.  It so bad, we are missing legit dm’s from folks who actually want to engage.  We’ve had enough!  While the necessary tools to Opt Out of many Twitter auto welcome messages have been around for months, we are finally pulling the trigger.  You can too.

Most of the auto-welcome messages are coming from the SocialOomph platform [formerly TweetLater] which is, in fact, a very valuable service on many levels.  We believe the creators of SocialOomph, shouldn’t be held responsible for those who misuse their service to send you spam.  By all accounts SocialOomph is a responsible social networking citizen that offers you the opportunity to opt-out of direct messages generated by users on their platform.

Opt-out of Twitter Auto Welcome DMs

Perform these easy steps in this order:

1) Follow @optmeout
2) Wait for them to follow you back.
3) Send @optmeout a direct message – you can say anything
4) Finally,  Unfollow @optmeout

Following these steps will go a long way to reducing your auto-welcome spam, but it won’t stop it all.  Thanks to a post at My Twitter Experiment we can also share with you some additional Twitter DM Opt-out addresses.  From their blog:

Husband, Dad, Good friend to many.  He is on a mission to reach 100k followers.  We can’t vouch for Twixplode, but we like his blog.  Follow him, help him reach his 100k mark, and decide for yourself.

Finally, we’d like to share one more link on the topic of auto direct messages. Check out Auto-DMs on Twitter: Demon Spawn or Fluffy Fawn? It’s a great post by Antone Roundy that is equal parts funny and insightful.  It seems he is an affiliate marketer with a sense of humor.  You can follow him @antoneroundy

Until next time, be well, reduce your DM noise, and happy tweeting.  Oh, and you should share and tweet your comments below!
